Disc collection help

September 21st, 2007 · No Comments

One of my fav offline hobbies crosses over to the online world. I love to crate dig for records. If there is a yard sale with an old pile of records kicking around I’ll be first in line trying to find some classic records. Of course I’m not the only digging through the vinyl but that part of the fun.

A new site that caters to my rare record needs has recently launched. What that site does is dig through the various auctions on eBay and digs up the really rare and undervalued records.

The problem with all the auctions on ebay is that some of the vinyl being sold in bad condition. The record collecting industry has a truly weird scale when they grade a record. The best ones are obviously mint unopened records but they are very hard to find for some more funky, jazz type recordings.

Sometimes with the auctions the seller might not even realzie that they have a classic album up on auction. I know of one local dj who looks over hundreds of auctions on Ebay. he’ll buy certain records because he knows that certain songs were sampled on more popular modern recordings. He’ll buy the classic vinyl and simply wait 60 days for the auction record to expire from his Ebay profile. He’ll relist the item for sale with a much better description of the recording and all the samples that were used. In some cases he’s able to get 10X as much as the first sale price just by providing a better description of the record.
